During his stay at the Max-Planck-Institute in Stuttgart, he worked on nonequilibrium properties of the QHE. For this purpose, a LASER system operating in the far-infrared spectral range was assembled in his group. Furthermore, electrical pulses of pulse durations below 1ns were applied to several samples. He continued in this field, in particular focussing on the electrical and optical breakdown of the QHE, after joining the TU Braunschweig in 2000 (associated professor). Due to this work, the scientific community gained insight into the electrical and optical generation and relaxation processes of the QHE. The length and time scales of these processes were investigated in detail.

His scientific teaching activities started in 1983 and include several internships, lectures and seminars. These teaching activities were dedicated to general physics and also to the physics of low-dimensional systems.

Since 1996, Georg Nachtwei has also worked as a scientific referee for several journals (Physical Review B, Physical Review Letters und Journal of Applied Physics).
