Rainer Tutsch's main field of research is optical techniques for 3D measurement of shape and deformation, e.g. photogrammetry, structured illumination techniques, interferometry and speckle interferometry with applications in quality assurance, material research, reverse engineering etc. This is complemented by investigations in development and application of multisensor coordinate measuring machines and techniques of sensor and data fusion. The third topical focus is micro-metrology with techniques like microscopy, white-light interferometry, laser-interferometry and scanning electron microscopy. Acoustic holography, the attempt to transfer the principle of 3D reconnaissance from optics to ultrasound, is the fourth focus, while industrial applications of spectroscopic techniques were started in 2006 as a fifth focus.

Rainer Tutsch is active member of two workgroups for standardization:
• VDI/VDE-GMA 1.10 Grundlagen der Messtechnik (Fundamentals of Metrology)
• VDI/VDE-GMA 3.32 Optische 3D-Messtechnik (Optical 3D Metrology)
He has different functions in the boards of several international conferences, organized by VDI, SPIE and IEEE. Prof. Tutsch is board member of the International Journal of Optomechatronics and official reviewer of Measurement.
