Prof. Hesselbach works on the development of new machine concepts. He has conducted a series of development projects with industrial companies. In 2001, he, together with two staff members, was awarded the technology transfer prize by the chamber of commerce and industry for the development of a glass cutting machine with parallel structure of the tool head. Since 1994, Prof. Hesselbach works in the field of micro assembly and is especially involved in the development of handling devices for micro parts with miniaturised grippers. In the year 1998, he became coordinator of the successful setup of the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 516 "Construction and Production of Active Microsystems" by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Another SFB under participation of the IWF is the SFB 562 "Robotic Systems for Handling and Assembly – High Dynamic Parallel Structures with Adaptronic Components" has been supported by the IWF.

Prof. Hesselbach is a member of well-known associations like CIRP, ACATECH, WGP, IFFTOM. He pursued a professorship at the CDHK Tongji University in Shanghai, China, in 2001. Since 2002, he is assigned honorary professor at the University of Aeronautics and Astronautics Beijing, China.
