Single-charge effects in short arrays of small Josephson junctions

Small Josephson junctions exhibit charging effects that are predicted to result in a behaviour which is the electromagnetic dual to the well-known Josephson oscillations and constant-voltage Shapiro steps, namely Bloch oscillations and constant-current steps. This makes them a possible candidate for a current standard. The observation of these effects requires a high-impedance electromagnetic environment and very low temperatures. We examine the neccessary conditions for observing these effects for realistic sample parameters using circuit simulations as well as measurements on fabricated samples measured in a dilution refrigerator.
