Laser-spectrometric breath analysis: aspects of metrology

Calibration-free spectrometry techniques have been proven in the past years to be valid methods determining amount fractions of gas species in given mixtures. Thus, early disease detection by means of measuring trace components (biomarkers) in human breath by such a method was becoming applicable. As a metrology prerequisite, we measure the amount of substance fraction probing ro-vibrational lines in relevant spectral regions, both in NIR and MIR and validating spectrometric results against gravimetry. Molecular species prepared gravimetrically in mixtures with nitrogen are used to establish the IR laser-spectrometric method. The so called TILSAM method, its raw data processing part and the respective uncertainty budgets are in focus.
