Estimation of measurement uncertainty in the case of fusion of point clouds in optical 3D metrology

A number of different optical 3D measurement techniques are currently used for measuring the shape of objects. In general these techniques render point clouds consisting of a large number of measured surface points. For each of these points, the uncertainty of the three coordinate values can be estimated. The uncertainty in most cases is distributed anisotropically, leading to uncertainty-ellipsoids around each of the measured points. For a complete surface measurement, several point clouds have to be digitized from different directions, e.g. by moving a measurement instrument around the object. The point clouds have to be fused to get an overall surface description. In this research work, a rigorous treatment of the error propagation will be done and different mathematical approaches of data fusion will be compared.
