The topics investigated by the group of Prof. Lemmens are related to the interplay of structure, magnetism and electronic properties of novel transition metal compounds and artificial materials. Application related research is centred on novel concepts of sensor materials, large magnetoresistance, multiferrocity and optical nonlinearity. Interdisciplinary research is performed using database mining in collaboration with chemists from Sweden and Japan. Furthermore, Prof. Lemmens is one of the founders and a member of the steering committee of the project "Highly Frustrated Magnetism" of the European Science Foundation (ESF-HFM, 2005-2010).

The experimental techniques of the group are based on inelastic light scattering, ultrasound spectroscopy and different preparation techniques. Our aim is a better understanding of the critical behaviour of quantum magnets, charge and orbital states in molecular or weakly coupled systems and their application in information and sensor technology. Our results are published in several invited review articles or chapters in books and about 120 refereed publications.
