Summer School of Metrology 2015

In August 2015 an international summer school on metrology was held by PTB in cooperation with B-IGSM and supported by the Helmholtz-Fonds e. V. at Kloster Drübeck. Almost 70 PhD students coming from 18 different home countries attended the event. Six of the participants from developing and emerging countries were awarded grants to attend the summer school, provided by the Federal German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The event consisted of keynote presentations by national and international experts on contemporary metrological issues, in particular the redefinition of units and their practical application, as well as the discussion of metrological core concepts. The topic “measurement uncertainty” was addressed from an overarching point of view and supplemented by a lively exercise on how to determine the body height of a person wearing shoes.

The summer school had strong interactive elements. As intended the attendees used the brakes and particularly the poster sessions enthusiastically for scientific exchange and networking with each other and the speakers. A guided tour across the grounds of Kloster Drübeck and a barbecue rounded off the program.
