Ionizing Radiation (IR) plays an important role in science, technology and industry. In the environment by natural radiation exposure and in medicine and health protection IR is on one side a risk factor but also an important diagnostic and therapeutic tool. Its detection and specification in terms of kind, energy, spatial distribution and the quantification of the effects on matter and on biological systems is a metrological art, which started at the PTR with Hans Geiger more than 100 years ago.

In this lecture the fundamental interactions of radiation with matter will be discussed and a review of the most important principles of radiation detectors, spectrometers and imaging systems will be provided. Examples of present applications and detection techniques in metrology will conclude the lecture.
