Ion Traps and Mass Spectrometers

Title of series
Foundations of Metrology – Instrumentation
Event Type
Lecture

Electrically charged particles can be trapped in suitable arrangements of magnetic or radio-frequency electromagnetic fields.

In the first half of the lecture the basics of the two most common types i.e. the Penning and the two-dimensional Paul trap will be outlined.
In the second part of the lecture examples will be presented of most recent technical implementations of ion traps and experiments at the frontier of metrology where such ion traps are utilized for mass spectrometry.
