Fluorescence microscopy has become the fastest developing imaging modality in the life sciences. In this lecture, I will highlight the key developments that lead to the nobel prize in Chemistry in 2014 for superresolution microscopy. I will then discuss current developments for imaging in environments of higher complexity and with even higher resolution.
